Game day in Jacket stadium!

Sorry I haven't blogged in a while, but not much happening around here. We're just trying to get by in school every day and deal with Mark's crazy football schedule. Speaking of football... we had our first home game the other night - right in the midst of Tropical Storm Lee. The girls and I decided to go and just leave when the weather got bad (or so I thought).

So, speaking of the band, they ditched out early because the rain came in, and I figured we'd leave before half time... well the girls were having a great time playing in the rain (it just kinda sprinkled the whole time), and I sat under the ledge by the field house, so I stayed dry and we ended up staying the entire game. They had a blast, and I took this picture of them with Mark with my phone. This is one of my favorite pictures ever - mainly b/c Emma was oddly inspired to flex her muscles! This picture says a lot about both of my kids' personalities!

First day of school and football pics

So... unfortunately school has started in Livingston Parish (yipee!) and the entire Carroll family heads back to the fun and excitement of education. I just snapped a few pics that morning, as I was probably still asleep halfway through first hour.

Here they are posing for Mom. This will be their last year ever of going to the same school. Starting next year, they will always be at different schools (sniff, sniff).

Before school spa party

One of Emma's friends, Cameron (whose mom happens to be my coworker also), decided she wanted to have a "Spa Party" before school started. The girls absolutely loved it. They did manicures and pedicures, curled hair and got facials. It was too cute.

Quick beach trip

So Mark and I have a hard time not taking a beach trip right before school starts, and eventhough we did "big Disney" (as I like to say) this year, we knew we weren't going to be able to properly start school without visiting the shores of Alabama. I got a decent email discount, so we booked a quick 3 night stay in Gulf Shores. We stayed at a condo we had never visited and ended up really liking our place. It was right off of Hwy 59 and easy to get to.

Anyhoo.... here are some photos.

Katie got a boogie board last trip, and so we had to get one for Emma this time, and they really got a lot of use out of it now that they are both brave to go in the Gulf. Here they are posing before we go out the first morning:

We spent lots of time in the water this trip and less time at the pool, which Mark and I both love! For a few years it was hard to get them out of the pool, but they love it now:

We have several tradtions at the beach, visiting the Shark store, going to The Hangout (a new one) and flying a kite. Well... this one wasn't so successful. We waited until the last day to do it, and the weather was not great. Notice there are no actual pictures of any flying kites:

So one of our new traditions is visiting The Hangout right where Hwy 59 meets the Beach road. This is only the 2nd time we have been there, and the kids love it. If you haven't been there, it just a huge area on the beach with a big sand pile and games for the kids to play. This makes it really great when you have to wait a little while for a table. Mark and I could sit down with a beer and watch the girls play. If you've heard of it, they also have big music festivals there and such (including my boyfriend Jon Bon Jovi!). You gotta go there. (Oh, the food is just kinda okay - don't expect too much - kinda like Disney... you don't go there for the food - well, technically I guess you do go there for the food, but don't expect fine dining!)

Last time we went, it was in late May, and basically it wasn't very crowded. Still lots of fun, but no "wow" factor. This time it was a Friday night and a cajun band from Lafayette was playing. The place was packed with people (90% from good ole' Louisiana). Mark and I actually danced a little bit. Here's the band and the crowd:

Okay, so as I mentioned earlier, one of our beach traditions is visiting the Shark souvenir store (I think it might be Souvenir City) as you come into Gulf Shores by the beach. Even if we stay in Orange Beach, we go by on our way home. So my lucky husband always gets a parking spot in front. Well it was super packed this time and we had to go around the back to park..... did you know there was a giant pirate ship in back... neither did we! I was shocked to find this amazing pirate ship in back. Who knew?

And the next morning, the girls with their (also traditional) air brush shirts. Gosh those things have gotten expensive. Maybe one day they can make a quilt out of their collection!

First Annual Weimer Girls weekend

My niece, Emily graduated from high school this year, and for her present she wanted to have a weekend in New Orleans with her 2 favorite aunts! (and her mom too, of course) We decided this would have to be an annual trip from now on. (... with no husbands and no children under 18 - woo - hoo!) Since my sister and her family live in Plano Texas now, she doesn't get to come to the "big Easy" very often. It was a great weekend.

We started off Friday afternoon on Magazine street - shopping and eating:

We ate at "The Rum House" on Magazine - yummy carribean food - and great drinks. Here are Jane and Emily (kinda blurry pic, sorry)

Here is my plate of yummy fish and steak tacos (not together) with fried plantains and creamy polenta - delicious!

Then we did a lot of shopping including some of the antique shops. Too bad Emily doesn't have any more proms to attend, this early 1980's inspired dress and ugly hat would have been lovely!

That night we ate at a cute little uptown French restaurant called Cafe' Degas. It was delicious. Here is Kim, Emily and Jane:

So I found out on this trip that Emily is a very brave eater. She was willing to try something new, and they had antelope on the menu. Here she is with her antelope and the review is that it is definitely not gamey, but just 'different' from beef. We all tried it and liked it:

The next morning we headed out for the French Quarter (where we were staying on Royal Street) to shop. I had spotted this shop on Canal when we drove in and knew I had to shop there. I called it 'the pink store' b/c it was so pink from the outside. I don't even remember the name of it, but you can't miss it. Later we also saw another one closer to Jackson square.

It was an accessory girl's dream! (which I am not really, but I found some cute things for Katie and Emma) . Nannie Kim and Emily outside the store:

This was one of the few pictures I got of all four of us. It came out pretty good, but kind of far away for me. Here we are in Jackson Square:

We grabbed a quick lunch at Maspero's (with freakishly enough, no wait!):

We actually went to the D-Day museum that afternoon, but I didn't take any pictures b/c it was raining, pouring actually, when we got there. It was wonderful.

That evening we had reservations at Mr. B's right down from our hotel. I had never been to this Brennan's restaurant, and it was fabulous. I have got to take Mark there. We had amazing food and service.

Okay, so this was probably the best part of our evening, our assistant server, Kenneth. He sang to us and made snarky comments and just made us laugh out loud the entire time. Here he is giving Jane a hot towel after her messy shrimp:

When he found out we were celebrating Emily's graduation he have her a signed dessert menu (kind of tongue-in-cheek). It was hilarious.

Also, they write messages on balloons if you are celebrating special occasions, so Emily got her special graduation balloon. It was awesome:

Lastly, that next morning, we walked down the street from our hotel to get some beignets and we spotted our friend the cat that we had seen the day before in one of the art galleries we had visited. She evidently stays there even when the gallery is closed.

All in all it was a great weekend (except for some minor technical difficulties at the hotel which I will not mention - but lets just say that evidently at the Holiday Inn, 4 adults should only need 2 towels to bathe for 2 nights!!) We can't wait to do another weekend - maybe the beach - maybe New York... maybe Paris!!!! (guess I'll be driving my 12 year old van a few more years!)
